$50 MILLION

(more or less) is the estimated cost for NJDOT's Marlton Circle Elimination / Overpass Project. Much of that $50 million - saved by constructing an Intelligent Intersection - could be better-utilized elsewhere.

Send in your suggestions for additional roadway projects to significantly help ease the congestion in our community with some of the projected savings . . .

Heading North on 73 toward Mt. Laurel :

  • greatly lengthen the left turn lane onto Atrium Way (used by employees of Commerce Bank's Headquarters) to reduce or eliminate the morning gridlock of traffic attempting to continue straight on the 2 lanes of 73NB toward NJ Turnpike #4 and 295
  • a traffic light on 73 at Baker Boulevard to allow for safe and predictable exit and entry for the residents of the neighborhood behind the Sunoco station.

Heading South on 73 toward Mt. Laurel :

  • Township Engineer H. Richard Orth recommended widening and the addition of left-turn lanes at Brick and Evesham Roads. Mr. Orth’s report (prior to the 12/2/03 Town Council meeting) indicated that improvements at Brick and Evesham Roads will cost an estimated $1 million. ("State officials have indicated that it will be difficult to do any improvement work before the overpass is complete.")

Heading East on 70 toward Medford :

  • At a Town Council Meeting on March 21, 2006 Charles A. of Marlton suggested the widening of Route 70 from two lanes to four lanes through to the Red Lion Circle.     (Long-time residents brought to our attention that this may be a problem due to $$ provided by the Rockefeller Foundation in the 1950s to designate Route 70 as "Rockefeller Memorial Highway".  Let's hope some reporters enlighten us as to any restrictions to Route 70 and let us know how much money and how it was used.)
  • NJDOT's plan includes a new extension of Centre Boulevard connecting to Route 70 EB that is 2-way, allowing cars going north to turn right onto 70 Eastbound and also allowing cars to get off 70 Eastbound to head south on Centre Boulevard. This appears to be an excellent proposal to simplify traffic patterns in that area.
  • Add a left turn along with the existing right turn onto 70 exiting ShopRite.

Heading West on 70 toward Philadelphia :

  • Cherry Hill has assembled a very impressive "Route 70 Task Force" which first convened on January 25, 2007. They strongly recommend synchronization of traffic lights and 3 lanes in each direction. Included in their analysis are Route 70 intersections with Greentree Road and Springdale Road.
